Chapter 1 - The Glow
Jayden's world was six inches wide.
It fit in his palm, glowed in the dark, and never stopped buzzing. While his family laughed around the dinner table, Jayden laughed at something else — something on a screen, somewhere far away, with people he had never met.
"Jayden, put the phone down," his father would say, not unkindly. "The food is getting cold."
"One minute," Jayden would say. It was never one minute.
He didn't hate home. He just didn't see it anymore. Not really. Not when there were a million strangers out there waiting to tap a little heart on his videos.
He wanted to be known.
Chapter 2 - The Gift
On his sixteenth birthday, his father handed him a small wrapped box.
Jayden tore it open — and stopped breathing. The newest smartphone. The one he'd been dropping hints about for months.
"Dad… this is… how did you—"
His father smiled. "You've talked about your videos, your followers. I thought — maybe this helps you chase what you love."
Jayden hugged him hard. "You're the best."
He didn't know it yet, but that phone would take him further from home than he ever imagined.
Chapter 3 - The City
Three weeks later, Jayden was gone.
"I'm going where the opportunities are," he'd told his parents, backpack over one shoulder, new phone in his hand like a passport. "I'll visit. I'll call."
The city swallowed him whole — and for a while, it felt like flying.
His videos caught fire. Ten thousand followers. Fifty thousand. A hundred. Brands sent him free clothes. Strangers shouted his name on the street. He rented a small apartment with a skyline view and posted a tour of it, and the comments poured in like rain.
You're living the dream, Jayden. Goals. Never stop.
He read every one.
Chapter 4 - The Crash
It happened in a single night.
He woke up to a locked account, a drained bank balance, and a hashtag with his name on it — for all the wrong reasons. Someone had hacked him, posted cruel messages from his profile, and by morning the internet had decided who he was.
The followers vanished like smoke. The brand deals evaporated. The friends — the ones who'd crowded his apartment for parties — stopped answering his calls.
Within two months, the apartment was gone. Then the money. Then the pride.
Chapter 5 - The Café
On a cold Thursday night, Jayden sat on the curb outside a closed café, knees pulled to his chest, staring at a cracked phone screen.
The café had free Wi-Fi. That was the only reason he was there — close enough to steal a signal, far enough that no one would ask him to leave.
He opened his profile. Zero new followers. Three likes on his last video — a desperate, shaky thing he'd filmed in a bus station.
He was invisible. After all that noise, all that striving — invisible.
And then, thumb moving on its own, he opened his photo gallery. Old photos. He'd forgotten they were there.
Chapter 6 - The Photos
His dad, asleep on the couch with the TV on.
His little sister, grinning with missing teeth, holding up a drawing she'd made of him — "my big brother the star."
The dinner table. Steam rising off jollof rice. His mother's hand, mid-laugh, reaching for the serving spoon.
Jayden stared at that photo for a long time.
Nobody in those pictures had ever tapped a heart on his videos. Nobody in those pictures cared how many followers he had.
And they had loved him — really loved him — the whole time.
Something broke open in his chest. Not the loud kind of breaking. The quiet kind. The kind that finally tells the truth.
What did I actually lose? he thought. Not followers. I lost this. I lost them.
Chapter 7 - The Road Home
He sold the cracked phone for bus fare.
The whole ride home, he rehearsed what he'd say. Dad, I'm sorry. I was a fool. I don't deserve— He practiced sounding grown, sounding sorry, sounding like someone worth forgiving.
He walked the last half mile. Every step felt heavier. What if they were angry? What if his sister didn't recognize him? What if his father just… closed the door?
He turned onto his street. And stopped.
Chapter 8 - The Embrace
His father was standing in the front yard.
Not waiting — Jayden would learn later that his father had stood out there every evening for weeks, just… looking down the road. But in that moment, all Jayden saw was his dad see him, drop what he was holding, and run.
Run. A grown man, running down his own front lawn like a boy.
Jayden didn't get a single rehearsed word out. His father wrapped him up — dirt, torn jacket, shame and all — and held him so tight Jayden could hardly breathe.
"Welcome home, my son," his father whispered. "I've missed you."
Jayden pulled back, tears on his face. "Dad, I—"
His father shook his head, smiling through his own tears. "I've missed you. Not your posts."
Here's what Jayden learned on that curb outside the café, and what his father had known all along:
The world will love your highlight reel and forget your name by morning. But there is a love that doesn't need Wi-Fi — a love that runs down the driveway to meet you, exactly as you are.
Jesus told a story like this once — about a son who ran far, lost everything, and came home to a father who was already watching the road.
No matter how far you've scrolled away… home is still there. And the Father is still watching the road.
You are known. You are loved. Come home.
